About the Role
As AR Director you will own the end-to-end technical roadmap for the entire design of the Multi Modal Dawn’s Augmented Reality, Capabilities, and Integration. This Role is Full Stack for both Hardware AND Software meaning you will be creating the entire AR experience from the ground up hands on in our Gen 0 headset. You’ll be translating product level goals into reality such as:
- System Architecture Planning and Implementation
- Hands On Engineering
- Deep Self Direction and Collaboration
- Vendor and Partner management
- Field Deployment and QA
This Role will grow with the company and eventually culminate in the leadership of large scale teams across the entire Augmented Reality Division. You will have full latitude to work with our other early team members to build the future of XR with novel UX implementations incorporating design elements from a variety of disciplines.
What Success Looks Like After 12 Months
1. Prototype v1 shipped – A fully integrated headset + mobile stack demoed at 60-90 fps with sub-10 ms motion-to-photon latency.
2. Pilot trials live – Stable field tests running in at least two pilot cities with robust telemetry and user-feedback loops.
3. Scale-ready architecture – Clear path from beta prototype to DFM and mass production, with documented technical debt and BOM roadmap.
Compensation and benefits
$75,000 + substantial early equity.
Relocation package, visa sponsorship, and bilingual legal/accounting support if necessary.
Health, dental, and commuter benefits (Japan national standards).
How to Apply
Send a resume or LinkedIn Link plus a short blurb (< 300 words) about the most interdisciplinary technical challenge you’ve ever solved to jobs@ Blackflowreality.com with subject line “Director-AR-[Your Name]”. Portfolio links, GitHub repos, or published papers welcome.
We are an equal-opportunity employer and celebrate diversity of thought, background, and experience. If you’re excited by our mission but don’t meet every bullet, please apply anyway—your unique perspective could be the missing piece.
Requirements
Minimum.
8+ years in AR/VR, spatial computing, or real-time 3D graphics; 3+ years leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
Proven delivery of at least one shipped AR/VR headset, wearable, or large-scale mobile AR product (prototype to market).
Strong grasp of optics fundamentals (waveguides, lens distortion, eye-box, MTF) and human-factors ergonomics.
Deep knowledge of SLAM/VIO, sensor fusion, real-time rendering (Unity, Unreal, or native), and mobile GPU/SoC constraints.
Fluency in C++ and either Rust, Swift, or Kotlin; comfortable diving into GLSL/HLSL and shader optimization.
Familiarity with 5G/edge-compute architectures for low-latency content streaming.
Basic understanding of electrical engineering, PCB altercation, and wiring.
BONUS
Experience integrating BCI, haptics, Biosensing, or other Neuro-/bio-interfaces into consumer hardware.
Published research or patents in AR optics, computer vision, or human-computer interaction.
Prior work with regulated medical-adjacent devices or wellness products (IEC 60601, ISO 13485, etc.).
Master’s or PhD in EE, CS, Optical Engineering, or related field.
About the Company
We’re a deep-tech startup building the world’s first multimodal XR platform that fuses AR optics, AI, brain–computer interface (BCI), transdermal pharmacological injection (TPI), and lucid-dream induction (LDI). Our mission is to move everyday computing from flat screens into an embodied, spatial experience that promotes exploration, wellness, and meaningful social connection. Backed by pre-seed stage investors, we’re assembling an engineering team to deliver a closed-loop beta prototype within the next 12 months.
